Vinted has landed itself in hot water with buyers and sellers alike after making a major change to its sizing system — a move dubbed a ‘complete dog’s dinner’ by one disgruntled customer.

As a result of the overhaul – intended to bring the second-hand marketplace’s sizes in line with international standards – thousands of items on site have been recategorised.

For example, a UK 16 would previously have been classed as XXL on Vinted, despite being an L across a number of other retailers.

Now, the L category has been updated to reflect this, going from ‘L/12’ to ‘L/UK 16-18’.

‘We’re updating the way we manage women’s and kids’ clothing sizes in listings to make shopping and selling on Vinted easier than ever,’ the company explained on its website.

‘Now, the sizes you see on these listings will be more accurate, especially for items purchased from other countries or international brands.’

On the surface, Vinted aligning with the rest of the industry’s seems like an uncontroversial choice.

But there’s quite a big disparity from the old framework to the new, and although listings were supposed to be automatically updated, some users claim the transition hasn’t exactly been seamless.

‘Now if I want a size 14 I can only choose medium which will show me all size 12 and 14s,’ wrote one upset Mumsnetter. ‘And my for sale items have completely the wrong size on them!’

Another said: ‘I just experimented by choosing both M and L – since I’m currently between a 14 and 16 – and I’m getting shown things that people have listed as M (following the old system I’m guessing) which are actually 10s. Well, that’s f**king useless.’

A third claimed 30 inch waist jeans (typically a size 12) are now advertised as 16-18, commenting: ‘Not going to work.’

Over on TikTok, one creator called it ‘a totally bonkers update,’ while Malia Rosa added: ‘It’s driving me insane. I’m searching for XXL and getting size 12s.’

Others branded it a ‘nightmare’ and a ‘mess’, saying they hoped the issue would be resolved quickly – but Mumsnet user @ThirdStorm took matters into their own hands and got in touch with Vinted themselves.

The allegedly received a reply reading: ‘I am sorry you can’t choose the correct size for your item. We are always looking for ways to improve our members’ experience of selling and buying but technical changes on our platform can take some time.

‘Therefore, in the meantime I have some suggestions for you: Choose the closest size and clarify the correct size in the listing’s description; Always make sure that you are uploading the item to the right category (women, men, children); If possible, write the exact measurements of the item or add a picture of it; Before a buyer purchases the item, make sure to provide full information to avoid any kind of misunderstanding (especially if they are from a different country where sizes might differ). I hope this helped.’

Metro contacted Vinted for a response, to which a spokesperson reiterated the following: ‘We’ve updated our size guidelines for women’s and kid’s clothing to make sizing more accurate across international brands. UK members will have received a message in their Vinted inbox with more details and you can also find full information on our Help Centre.’

It acknowledges that, in the short term, people may have to update the sizing on some of their items, but long term it believes it will make finding the right fit easier, as it more accurately defines sizes.

The company has u-turned on a change to their site before, according to the BBC, after it updated its delivery options last year then backtracked when users claimed it would make selling trickier.

The list of multiple courier options for sellers disappeared, meaning sellers could no longer opt for the courier that suited them most, before promptly re-appearing after the site listened to user feedback about the change.
