Abbie Elian had been suffering through an exhausting cycle of infections, pain and fatigue for five months when nurses suggested her IUD<\/a> could be the cause.<\/p>\n

She’d had the contraceptive device \u2014 often referred to as a coil \u2014 inserted for six years and, while she’d struggled with hormonal imbalances and heavy cycles, the multiple UTIs<\/a>, yeast infections<\/a>, sharp pelvic cramps and even kidney stones<\/a>, were all new.<\/p>\n

The decision was made to remove it, but doctors were stunned by the ‘horrifying’ hairball that came out attached to the device, almost half its size.<\/p>\n

‘When the doctor took it out, they called it a hairball. I didn’t touch it. We don’t think it’s just hair. We think it’s probably tampon<\/a> fragments, maybe toilet paper fragments, my hair from my head,’ Abbie, 29, from San Diego, California<\/a>, says.<\/p>\n

She’d done over 20 Telehealth visits (online appointments in the US<\/a>), where she was prescribed antibiotics, but couldn’t get an in-person appointment until four months after her symptoms began.<\/p>\n

When she finally attended an in-person gynaecology appointment, the healthcare professional said the issue wasn’t related to the contraceptive device.<\/p>\n

I was mortified,’ she adds. This was just the icing on the cake and made nothing easier.’<\/p>\n<p>She believes she wouldn’t have gotten through any of her ordeal without her partner.<\/p>\n<p>‘I can\u2019t stress enough how much the partner you choose in your life matters,’ Abbie adds. ‘I wouldn\u2019t have had the courage to go to those appointments or the emergency room without him.
