\u2018Well, it\u2019s confirmed,\u2019 the neurologist bluntly stated. \u2018Gary\u2019s got Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n

That was how we received the news in February 2022 of my husband\u2019s life-changing diagnosis \u2013 he was just 51 at the time, meaning it\u2019s classed as young-onset.<\/p>\n

Gary couldn\u2019t believe it and was in floods of tears, saying he didn\u2019t want to become a burden and that he\u2019d understand if I wanted to leave him. I simply replied, \u2018Don\u2019t be daft, I\u2019m not going anywhere\u2019.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve known each other practically our whole lives.<\/p>\n

Gary and I actually grew up on the same street in the north-east English town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. We went to the same primary school<\/a>, but he was four years above me so we never really spoke.<\/p>\n
