Lying in bed next to my husband, John, I writhed in agony. Something was horribly, terribly wrong.
‘John, I’m dying,’ I managed to cry out in pain.
It was 4am in March 2009 and our then-four-year-old son was asleep in the house so John jumped into action, calling an ambulance and asking my mum to come over and babysit.
For two weeks leading up to this I’d been bleeding heavily outside of my cycle with painful cramping. I’d been to the GP where we live in Edinburgh and even to A&E multiple times but no one had been able to help or give me any answers.
Now it was much, much worse.
I had this instinct that something very serious had happened and I knew my life was at risk.
With the blue lights of the ambulance outside lighting up the hallway, my four-year-old appeared in the doorway, bleary-eyed.
‘Mummy is going to be fine, a doctor is going to make me better,’ I promised him, before leaving him with my mum to travel to hospital with John.
At the hospital, we were kept waiting in A&E and the pain continued but when I passed more blood and tissue I pleaded with John to get help – I couldn’t wait any longer.
John got me the attention I needed and I was quickly seen by a consultant who soon told me, with certainty, that I was experiencing a ruptured ectopic pregnancy and an immediate operation was required.
I barely remember signing consent forms before being rushed into life-saving surgery.
It was only after waking up in recovery that I began to understand what had happened to me.
I had heard the term ectopic pregnancy before, but didn’t know much about it. Plus, I had been fitted with a copper coil after my son was born – I shouldn’t have fallen pregnant at all.
I learned that an ectopic pregnancy happens when the fertilised egg grows outside of the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube.
The foetus can’t survive outside of the uterus but the tissues can grow and cause a blockage that will eventually burst (rupture) out of the fallopian tube.
When this happens, it’s a life-threatening emergency because it can cause such huge blood loss. It also means that the ruptured fallopian tube has to be removed.
If an ectopic pregnancy is detected before it ruptures, it can usually be treated safely.
I hadn’t been given that opportunity.
For two weeks, I’d tried to find answers to the pain I’d been experiencing. I’d taken time away from my busy job as a senior account planner at an ad agency to attend appointments and visit the hospital, where medical professionals didn’t lay a finger on me or even give me even a blood or urine test.
At home, our preschool son had wanted me to play, but for a fortnight I’d spent most of my time curled up in a ball in agony, while trying to keep up with work. It was horrific.
The doctors I’d seen before the rupture should have recognised the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, and I should have been tested, but instead I’d been left in a state of decline.
Close friends and colleagues had commented on the fact that my appearance was turning grey, rather than my usual healthy pink.
Once I’d been dismissed from hospital post-surgery, I was signed off from work for three months to recover from the huge blood loss and emergency procedure.
I spent the recovery time lying on the sofa, eating the prescribed spinach and red meat at mealtimes. I was keen to get back to work, but needed to build my strength back up first.
On my first day back my boss asked to see me. I hoped he would reassure me that I had been missed, let me know what exciting new projects he had lined up for me, or even just ask after my health.
But during our meeting he didn’t ask after my health, but rather seemed to dismiss the seriousness of my experience and I understood from our conversation that the work I’d completed, on the day I was hospitalised, had been considered ‘substandard.’
I was staggered and it was at that moment that I knew I needed to make a change.
John and I had discussed trying to have a second child once I had recovered, so despite having set my sights on working in advertising since my teenage years, I decided to leave the industry, hoping to take maternity leave and never go back.
Thankfully my daughter was born in 2010 with no issues despite me having only one remaining fallopian tube.
And when my statutory maternity leave ended, I handed in my notice.
For 18 months, I stayed at home with our children and gave myself the time and space to plan my next career steps.
We’d been through such a sobering experience that I wanted to be present with my family.
I also decided to give feedback to the Scottish Health Board to ask them to improve their training to recognise the risk of ectopic pregnancy in female patients with abdominal pain and to test for pregnancy in all women with symptoms.
I was told too much time had passed for my complaint to be actioned officially, but I still felt better for raising the issue. I hope it made a difference.
The whole experience was hugely damaging to my confidence and I decided not to return to advertising agencies when I did go back to work.
In fact it took years for me to return to my first career love, marketing.
While our children were young I launched and ran a hip-hop dance company flexibly around nursery and school hours.
Finally, in 2017 I felt I had the confidence to go back to my marketing roots and started Enjoy Marketing.
Over time, my offers and services grew. Now we have a team of five working for us, including John and me. Everyone at Enjoy Marketing is treated with respect and trust which remains a huge priority for me.
I’ve also launched a podcast – From Overlooked To Fully Booked – to support other business owners on their journey and help make marketing accessible to them.
All of this is only possible because I’m still here. I’m so lucky I can say a ruptured ectopic pregnancy only changed my life, rather than ending it.

I’m obsessed with my Ugg-inspired slippers which are now on sale for under £16

Slippers are a firm favourite homeware item I have lived in for decades, and live in daily for that matter.
While I have relied on Ugg’s Scuffette II slippers for many years, after wearing them down to the bare bones it was time to replace them.
But I wasn’t willing to fork out £90, so I have been on the hunt for a comfortable and supportive pair of closed toe slippers. Lo and behold, M&S’ Suede Faux Fur Cuff Mule Slippers are a close alternative, and more affordable option – I would even go as far as to say I prefer them to the high end creation.
M&S Suede Faux Fur Cuff Mule Slippers
Made from a faux fur fabric that resembles suede and plush fur for a comfortable fit. The design has a stain-resistant faux smooth suede outer toe section, while the fur lining has antibacterial properties for a fresh fit.The sole has a slight platform, which provides extra cushioning, and the base features a cleated sole for extra grip.
UGG Women's Scuffette II Slipper
The luxurious home footwear has been crafted from sheepskin insole, outsole, as well as inner liner and collar, while the outer toe is a contrast smooth suede texture.It also features a rubber grip sole.Available in sizes 3 to 10, as well as three colourways.
Firstly, I love a closed toe slipper to stop my toes from getting frostbite, hence why I prefer the mule style.
The UGG Scuffette II has been crafted from real sheepskin on the lining, insole, as well as outsole, combined with a plush fur collar, while the outer toe is a smooth suede. The inner area is soft and plush, which is a dream to slip your feet into on a cold winter’s morning. These slippers also boast a rubber outsole, so you won’t be slipping and sliding on hard flooring.
M&S slippers have similar features. The mule slippers have been made from faux fur fabric, which feels even softer than the real fur. These slippers boast a fur cuff, inner lining and insole, as well as smooth faux suede outer toe section, similar to the Scuffette II.
What stands these slippers out is the padded foam insole has antibacterial properties to keep your feet, as well as the shoes, clean and fresh. One pet peeve of mine was my former UGG slippers stained easily, and I needed to spritz a suede protector on them. However, I didn’t have to do this with the M&S slippers because they are made from a stain-resistant suede upper.
Instead of a grip sole, the M&S slippers have a cleated sole with grooves to provide the necessary grip. The sole is slightly elevated, which provides extra support as it lifts the feet up from the ground. I think this is particularly important, as eventually the fur starts to flatten, which meant the UGG slippers lost its support after a few wears, yet M&S still provide that extra cushioning.
The price is also another huge factor, as M&S slippers retail for £15.75, which is a saving of nearly £75.
The high street buy is available in four colours, including tan, grey, pink and navy blue, though stock is selling out fast, so only the latter two versions are available. Whereas, UGG’s Scuffette slippers are available in three tones.
Fellow M&S shoppers are head over heels for the indoor footwear item.
One happy shopper commented: ‘When I put them on I was amazed at the luxurious feel of them. The faux fur lining is fabulous, if I didn’t know otherwise I would think it was sheepskin. Overall I would say that these slippers are a really good buy and feel very comfortable.’
A second shopper shared: ‘So comfortable and also so cozy to wear . These slippers really keep your feet toasty warm, highly recommend.’
A third added: ‘These suede mules are great. I’ve got them wet several times and the water doesn’t stain them unlike other suede slippers. They’re comfy inside, and do not slip off my feet. Really well made and a great price.’

Joanie Clothing recently collaborated with print designer, Celia Birtwell, on a fashion collection – which sold out due to popular demand – and we can see why.
In a bid to fill the Celia Birtwell x Joanie collection shaped hole in our closet, the brand has restocked the 14-piece limited-edition capsule, much to our delight.
Can we get a woop-woop?
Celia Birtwell is one of the most influential textile designers of her generation. She was a muse to iconic artist David Hockney, and the creative partner of fashion icon Ossie Clark. Her distinctive designs shaped the fashion landscape of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, an era known for its artistic and cultural explosion, which she has called on for her Joanie Clothing collaboration.
So, when Joanie Clothing first teamed up with Celia, it sent fans into meltdown.
Celia is best known for her whimsical, ditsy florals, and bold, clashing prints, which she has injected into the timeless dresses and blouses in the Joanie collection.
This limited collection of 12 dresses and two blouses draws inspiration from the 70s era, as they boast a bohemian style, are made from environmentally conscious chiffon and silky satin-feel fabric, and emblazoned with bold prints, which can be worn time and time again.
Fans of Celia’s work will be excited to see the inclusion of the romantic Marie Antoinette print, which was created in the early 1970s, as well as the Delaware print that featured on a number of Ossie Clark designs in the Celia Birtwell x Joanie collection.
Speaking about the collaboration, Celia shared: ‘When I was approached by Joanie, I was delighted to find that an enthusiastic company, run by sharp and savvy women who knew their market, was interested in using my prints.
We were able to sit down and discuss what sort of designs in which colours they thought would work best, and we discussed which clothes best suited which designs. It has been a very harmonious relationship, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working on the collection.’

Ugg trainers are here – and we predict they’ll be the shoe of the year

UGG is best known for its super plush boots, whether it is the Ultra Mini Boot to the Classic Tall Boot, as well as the luxurious Scuffette II slippers.
